昨日から「The complicated truth about a cat’s purr -「猫のゴロゴロにまつわる複雑な真実」を読んでいます。

Even though science is now fairly sure this is the process, there’s no definitive answer as to what triggers the response.
これが喉を鳴らすプロセスであることは科学的にほぼ間違いなさそうだが、何がきっかけで起こるのかについては、明確な答えがない。

The biggest clue is a neural oscillator deep within the cat’s brain, one that otherwise has no clear purpose.
最大の手がかりは、猫の脳の奥深くにある、目的がはっきりしない神経振動子だ。

oscillator「振動するもの、動揺する人、発振器、振動子」。

But if that neural oscillator is triggered, is it just when a cat is happy?
しかしその神経振動子を引き金とするなら、それは猫が喜んでいる時だけだろうか？

Sometimes.
時々はそうだろう。

But only sometimes.
だが時々、だ。

Marjan Debevere is a cat shelter photographer in London who is currently studying for a degree in feline psychology.
Marjan Debevere氏は、ロンドンの猫シェルターの写真家で、現在は猫の心理学の学位を取るべく勉強している。

She is also the owner of four cats – Clive, Hula, Luigi and Archie – who are something of an Instagram sensation
彼女はまた、クライブ、フラ、ルイージ、アーチーという４匹の猫の飼い主でもあり、インスタグラムでも話題になっている。

Part of the mystery around the purr is that we often only notice cats purring “when we tickle them in places that they like to be tickled”, says Debevere.
ゴロゴロ音の謎のひとつは「猫がされると喜ぶ場所をくすぐった時」にしか、それに気づかないことが多い点だとDebevere氏。

Yet they also purr when we’re not around, and the extent of that purring varies between individuals.
だが猫は人がいない時にも喉を鳴らすし、鳴らし方にも個体差がある。

“All cats are different, some never purr and some will purr constantly,” she says.
「猫はみんな異なっていて、絶対に鳴らさない子もいれば、絶えず鳴らし続ける子もいます」と彼女。

彼女の愛猫を比較すると

- a stray who followed someone in to their office and was subsequently taken to a shelter -
野良猫で、人の後を追ってオフィスに来て、その後シェルターに連れて来られたルイージ、

and Archie, who “moved in from next door” and became part of the family.
そして「隣から引っ越してきて」家族の一員となったアーチー。

Luigi purrs little, and Archie a lot.
ルイージはほとんど喉を鳴らさず、アーチーはよく鳴らす。

ゴロゴロ音は、猫によって音量も結構違って、うちの先住猫は鳴き声・大、ゴロゴロ音・小。

後輩猫は鳴き声・小、ゴロゴロ音・大。

そして後輩猫の方はよくゴロゴロ言ってます（笑）。

撫でる前、もう顔を見ただけでもゴロゴロ言ってたりするので、機嫌が良い印とばかり思ってきましたが、そうとも限らない？？

先を読むのがちょっと不安になってきます。。。
