先日から「The complicated truth about a cat’s purr -「猫のゴロゴロにまつわる複雑な真実」を読んでいます。

The more science has delved into the purr, the more it seems to have uncovered.
ゴロゴロ音は科学が掘り下げるにつれ、解明されていくようだ。

delve「探究する、詮索する、掘り下げる」。

“Researchers have recorded ‘ordinary purrs’ and purrs that were soliciting food from their owners,” says Celia Haddon, an author and cat behavioural expert.
「研究者たちは『普通のゴロゴロ』と、飼い主に食べ物をせがむゴロゴロを記録しています」と、作家で猫の行動学の専門家であるセリア・ハドン氏は言う。

solicit「懇請する、せがむ、誘う、声をかける」。

“Even non-cat owners could tell the difference.
「猫を飼っていない人でも、その違いはわかると思います。

Inside the ordinary low purr was a higher frequency cry, somewhat like a meow.
普通の低いゴロゴロ音の中にはより高い周波数の、まるであのニャーという鳴き声が含まれている。

“This particular sound is rather like the isolation cry of kittens or the human baby distress cry.
「この音は子猫の孤独の叫びや、人間の赤ちゃんの苦痛の叫びに似ています。

We humans are naturally sensitive to the baby cry, so we respond also to the cry within the purr.”
私たち人間はもともと赤ちゃんの泣き声に敏感なので、猫のゴロゴロ音の中の泣き声にも反応します。」

Sam Watson, the scientific officer at the UK’s animal charity the RSPCA, says there is still little understanding of how cats purr amongst each other in the wild, though it’s apparent that they will purr as they groom each other.
英国の動物慈善団体RSPCAの科学担当者、サム・ワトソン氏によると、野生の猫が互いに毛づくろいをしながら喉を鳴らす事は明らかだが、どうしてそれをするかについては、まだほとんど分からないという。

“There could be one for ‘I want that’, another for ‘Let’s share resources’.
「『それが欲しい』とか『リソースを分け合おう』という事かもしれません。

There are lots of things like that we know so little about.
私たちが知らないことはたくさんあります。

Feline communication is absolutely overlooked, and it deserves a lot more attention and study than it’s given today.”
猫のコミュニケーションについては見落とされがちで、今以上に注目され、研究されるべきものです。」

うちの猫たちを見ていると、毛づくろいはコミュニケーションというか、相手の猫への好意からなんだろうな～と思います。

先住猫は後輩猫からされるばかりで、自分がやってあげる事はない・・・。

それでも後輩猫は、せっせとほぼ毎日やってあげている。

だから後輩猫には、飼い主がブラッシングとかナデナデでご奉仕です（笑）。

好意（？）が一方通行過ぎて、後輩猫が不憫にも思えるんですが、毎日せっせとやっているので、何か彼なりに意味があるんでしょうね。
