・「合気道： 数百万人が実践する日本の武道」（１）
The adversaries, Junichi Gomita and Yoshinori Okazaki, were teachers (or sensei) at Aikido Tanabe Dōjō in Tanabe, the town in the Japanese prefecture of Wakayama where aikido’s founder Morihei Ueshiba was born in 1883.
1883年、合気道の創始者である植芝盛平が生まれた和歌山県田辺市にある、合気道田辺道場の師範だった、五味田潤一氏と岡崎良則氏。
Created by Ueshiba in the early 20th Century, aikido – meaning “way of harmonising energy”
20世紀初頭に植芝によって創始された合気道とは「天地の“気”に合する道」を意味し、

日本の9つの正式な武道の中で最も新しいものの一つであり
and Gomita and Okazaki are the latest generation of Tanabe sensei dedicated to spreading this deeply articulated practice and philosophy.
五味田氏と岡崎氏は、この深く明瞭な練習と哲学を広めることに専念している田辺道場の先生たちの一番新しい世代である。
Unlike other martial arts, aikido’s goal is to end conflict non-violently by “matching the opponent’s force”,
他の武道とは異なり、合気道の目標は「相手の力に合わせる」ことによって非暴力で争いを終わらせることであり
Gomita explained, to deflect strikes rather than overpower one’s adversary.
敵を圧倒するのではなく、攻撃をそらすことだと五味田氏は説明する。
Aikido is essentially aimed at self-defence; there are no winners or losers, and no competitions are held.
合気道は基本的に護身を目的としたもので、勝敗はなく、競技会も行われない。
“Ueshiba used to perform aikido for the deities at the shrine near the dojo (training hall),” Gomita said,
「植芝は、道場（稽古場）の近くの神社の神様に合気道を奉納していました」と、五味田氏は語り
a task that he has now taken up together with his father, who was appointed by Ueshiba as a representative of the martial art in the 1960s and founded Aikido Tanabe Dōjō in 1981.
1960年代に植芝からこの武道の代表に任命され、1981年に合気道田辺道場を創設した父とともに、現在この道を引き継いでいる。
Mastering aikido is about perfecting choreographed gestures so sublime to be worthy of the gods,
合気道を極めるとは、神々にふさわしい崇高な所作を完成させることであり
sublime「荘厳・崇高・雄大な、荘厳美、崇高なもの、高尚な、卓越した、抜群の、びっくりするほどの、ひどい」。
and the self-control required stems from the practitioner’s inner strength as well as the solidity of their stance.
そして必要とされる自制心は、練習者の内なる強さと、その堅固な姿勢に由来する。
闘わずして争いを収める、というのが大きなテーマなんですね。
今の世界情勢においても求められる視点だなあと思います。
身体がぶつかり合うとか、取っ組み合うとか、そういうのがあまり無いために、合気道は映像向きというか、華麗な武道という印象を持っているんだなと感じました。
東洋的な技と思想があるのは、やはり神様に奉納していたという歴史と関係があるんでしょうかね。
理由は単純明快！「少ないコストでしっかり楽しく学べるから」。
