One striking example is the husky.
その顕著な例はハスキーだ。
In their native territory of Arctic Greenland, Canada and Alaska, Inuit hunter-gatherers have traditionally fed these dogs on seal meat, which comprises the majority of their own diet.
彼らの故郷、北極圏のグリーンランド、カナダ、アラスカでは、イヌイットの狩猟採集民が、自分たちの食生活の大半を占めるアザラシの肉をこの犬に与えてきた。
Sled-dogs are so well-adapted to this that when the British Antarctic Survey brought them to Antarctica as a form of transport in 1945, they found that they struggled to digest commercial dog food.
そり犬が1945年にイギリスの南極調査隊が輸送手段として南極に連れてきた時、市販のドッグフードを消化するのに苦労したという話があるほど、その適応力は高い。

In the end, they had to kill a number of local seals each year, just to feed the dogs, before they were largely replaced with skidoos in the 1960s and 70s.
最終的には、犬に食べされるために毎年何頭もの地元のアザラシを殺す事になったが、1960年代から70年代にかけて、スノーモービルに役目を取って代わられた。
Meanwhile in Victorian London, dogs that were lucky enough to be looked after were either given table scraps or gruel.
一方、ヴィクトリア朝時代のロンドンでは、人間に世話をしてもらえる幸運な犬たちは、テーブルの残飯かお粥を与えられていた。

エキゾチックアニマルの専門家でさえ、日常的に人間の食べ物を与えており、

モロッコから年間２万匹も輸入されるカメも、家庭菜園の野菜や水に浸したパンなどで、生き延びていた。
Cats were considered street animals and rarely fed.
猫はストリートで生きる動物と見なされ、ほとんど餌はもらえなかった。
猫よ、よく命をつないできたな・・・。
でも昭和の日本でも、猫は割とそんな感じだったような気がします。
わざわざ室内で飼う人も多くなく、基本は外で餌と寝る時だけ家に戻ってくる存在で、あまり去勢手術もされていなかったような。
今は本当に地位が向上して何よりです。
理由は単純明快！「少ないコストでしっかり楽しく学べるから」。
