BBCを英語で読む「浮かぶ山：日本で最も遠いスキー場」（７）

先日から「The Floating Mountain: Japan’s most remote ski destination -「日本で最も遠いスキー場」を読んでいます。

“Today’s wind is coming from the west, so we’ll ski on the east face,” Toshiya informed me when I made my way downstairs for my first day of skiing.
「今日は西からの風なので、東面を滑って下さいね」と、初日の滑走のために階段を下りてきた私に、敏哉さんは教えてくれた。

It was just after dawn and the sunlight was gaining in intensity.
それは夜明け直後で、朝日が強くなってきた頃だった。

I peered out the living room window to find a new layer of fresh snow on the ground and a staggering view of Mount Rishiri, its white crests and cornices standing out against the crisp blue sky.
リビングの窓から外をのぞくと、新雪が積もり、真っ白な山頂と雪庇が青空に浮かび上がっている利尻山のものすごい景色が見えた。

staggering「よろめく、千鳥足の、唖然とさせる、驚異的な、びっくりするほどの」。

cornice「コーニス、軒じゃばら、雪庇(せっぴ)」。

After a breakfast of grilled local fish, homemade pickles and the customary bowl of rice,
地元の魚の塩焼きと自家製の漬物、そしていつものどんぶり飯の朝食を済ませると、

we quickly left the guesthouse and made the short 15-minute drive along the coast to the trailhead, just a stone’s throw away from the sea.
私たちはすぐにゲストハウスを出て、海岸沿いに15分ほど車を走らせ、海のすぐそばにある登山口へと向かった。

a stone’s throw away「（石が投げられるほど）とても近い、すぐそこ、目と鼻の先」。

As we started to climb, my eyes were fixed on the back of Toshiya’s boots rising and falling with a slow and regular rhythm as he broke trail with his skis.
山を登り始めると、スキーで道を切り開く敏哉さんのブーツの甲がゆっくりとしたリズムで上下するのが目に入る。

We worked our way up the ridgeline leaving behind a deep trail in the fresh snow.
新雪に深い痕跡を残しながら、稜線を登っていく。

After a few hours of steady climbing, lost in my thoughts, I took a second to pause and catch my breath, inhaling the cold, biting air.
数時間、物思いにふけりながらひたすら登り続けた後、私は一息ついて、冷たく凍てつく空気を吸い込む。

lost in thoughts「思案に暮れるような、じっと考え込むような、思いにふけるような」。

As I raised my head and turned to look behind me, the view was like nothing I had seen before.
頭を上げて後ろを振り向くと、そこには今まで見たこともないような景色が広がっていた。

Instead of mountains and valleys, I was staring directly down at the sea, which was painted in the deepest of blues that shimmered in the bright sunlight.
山や谷の代わりに、明るい日差しに映える深い青で塗られた海を、私は真下に見つめていたのだ。

想像すると、確かに不思議な景色だろうなと思います。

普通は山を登ったら、山や谷が見えるのに、冬の利尻山では白い雪と深く青い海が広がる。

正直今まで「物好きなお人だ・・・」と思っていたんですが（笑）、このパートを読んで初めて「なるほどそれは行く価値がありそうだ」と感じました。

苦労してたどり着いた人だけが見る、絵画か映画のような世界があるのでしょうね。
