先日から「The Floating Mountain: Japan’s most remote ski destination -「日本で最も遠いスキー場」を読んでいます。

Toshiya is the only guide who lives on the island year-round, and since 2004, he has been offering nature tours in both the summer and, crucially, winter.
敏哉さんは2004年以来、夏と、もちろん冬にも自然観察ツアーを開催している、島で暮らす唯一のガイドだ。

In his first year as a Rishiri ski guide, Toyisha had just a handful of winter customers.
利尻のスキーガイドになった最初の年、敏哉さんの冬のお客はほんの一握り。

Not many more came the next year.
翌年はもうあまり来なかった。

However, each person who visited went home with tales of a magical land of bottomless powder snow,

荒波と冷たい風によって手軽なスキー旅を求める人々や、スキーリゾートが内包する自然の商品化からここは守られていることを知った。

encroachment「蚕食、侵略、浸食、浸食地」。

implicit「暗に示された、言わず語らずの、暗黙の、絶対的・盲目的な」。

By 2019, just before the Covid-19 pandemic, Rera Mosir’s 25 beds were occupied for most of winter.
2019年、コロナの大流行直前には、レラ・モシリの25のベッドは冬の間、ほとんど埋まっていた。

“We now employ two extra guides to help bring clients, including professional skiers, out into the mountains and one person to help me with the guesthouse,”
「今はプロのスキーヤーを含むお客さんを山に案内するためのガイドを2人、ゲストハウスを手伝ってくれる人を1人雇っています」

explained Maki, who moved here from Sapporo when she married Toshiya in 2020, and hasn’t looked back since.
と、2020年に敏哉さんと結婚し、札幌から移住してきたマキさんは言う。

I’d decided to travel here after hearing countless stories about descending Rishiri’s ridges with unimpeded ocean views.
私は海を見ながら利尻の稜線を降りられるという話を何度も聞き、この地を訪れることにしたのだ。

Quietly, I was hoping to be able to complete one of my lifetime ski goals: skiing all the way to the sea.
密かに私の生涯の目標の一つである「海まで滑る」ことを達成できればと思っていた。

「海までスキーで滑って行く」これが出来る場所は、世界広しといえどもそう多くはなさそうです。

旅の達人はもはや有名観光地を巡るよりも、こうした「異次元の体験」を求めて世界中を練り歩くようになりましたね。

利尻島がそれが可能な場所の一つだったのでしょうか。
