Along the way many of them, such as the kiwi which has become the nation’s emblem, “forgot” how to fly.

When mammals arrived, New Zealand’s native bird species were suddenly faced with threats evolution just hadn’t prepared them for.
哺乳類がやってきたことで、ニュージーランドに生息する鳥類は、進化の過程で想定していなかった脅威に突然直面することになった。
New Zealand has, latterly, tried to redress this.
ニュージーランドは最近、この問題を解決しようとしている。
redress「矯正する、直す、正す、取り戻す、原因を取り除く、再び着せる」。
Alongside bird conservation programmes that have been running for more than a century,

conservation「保存、維持、保護、管理」。
its Predator Free 2050 campaign aims for the eradication of introduced pests such as rats, stoats, ferrets, weasels and possums.
「プレデターフリー2050」キャンペーンでは、ネズミ、イタチ、フェレット、イタチ、ポッサムといった外来害獣の根絶を目指している。
eradication「根絶、撲滅」。
But one animal has been left off the list – feral cats.
だがある動物がリストから外されてしまった、野良猫だ。
Campaigners say that’s a mistake, and that they should be added.
キャンペーン賛同者はそれは間違いであり、リストに追加すべきだと言っている。
Conservation groups are pushing for a national cat management act – the first of its kind to be rolled out for an entire nation.
自然保護団体は、国全体で展開される初めての猫管理法の制定を推進している。
But there are wider questions for the hundreds of thousands of New Zealand households that are home to a cat;
しかし猫を飼っているニュージーランドの何十万もの家庭には、もっと大きな疑問がある、
should New Zealand’s cats be kept away from the outside world?
猫たちは外界から遠ざけられるべきなのだろうか？
根絶キャンペーンの対象に、猫も含めるのかどうか。
鳥を守るには、猫、特に野良猫が居ては不可能。
しかし猫を根絶することに、強い反発があるのも確か。
では他の対象となっている生き物は良いのか、でも鳥も守らねば・・・という大きな葛藤が見えてきました。
飛べない鳥がこの国のシンボルということもありますし、難題ですね。
理由は単純明快！「少ないコストでしっかり楽しく学べるから」。
