For Szabo, the low-wash habit began when he bought his first pair of raw denim jeans in 2010.
サボにとってのロー・ウォッシュの習慣は、2010年に初めて生デニムのジーンズを買ったときに始まった。
Travelling from his native Canada to Europe, he brought his jeans for the six-month trip.
彼は生まれ故郷のカナダからヨーロッパへと旅する半年間のため、ジーンズを持参した。
“It was a quirk about me that I had these stinky jeans,” he tells BBC Culture.
「臭いジーンズは僕の奇癖なんだ」と彼は言う。
quirk「癖、奇癖、偶然、運命のいたずら」。
“They smelled awful.”
「ひどい臭いだったよ。」
In Budapest he met his future wife, and the jeans became a character in their relationship.
ブダペストで後に妻となる女性と出会い、ジーンズは2人の関係を記すものとなった。
“My jeans would be in, like, a pile on the floor at the end of the bed,” he remembers.
「僕のジーンズはその、ベッドの端の床に山積みになっていたよ」と彼。
“You walked into the room, you could smell [them]…
「部屋に入れば匂うくらい・・・。
I was very fortunate that my wife was as interested in me as she was.”
妻が僕と同じように興味を持ってくれたことは、とても幸運だった。」
Among the competitors in the Indigo Invitational, which starts its fourth year next January,
来年1月で4年目を迎えるインディゴ・インビテーショナルの参加者のうち、
more than nine out of 10 participants delay the first wash of their trousers until they have been worn 150 or 200 times, Szabo estimates.
10人中9人以上がズボンの最初の洗濯を150回か200回着用するまで遅らせている、とサボは見積もっている。
“Some of these pairs, as it’s coming up on the end of the year, I wouldn’t want to handle up close,” he says.
「年末に近づくにつれ、近くで扱いたくないものも出てくるよ」と彼。
“They would probably smell wrong.”
「多分キケンな臭いがするから。」
A few of his raw denim friends go even further, abiding by what he calls a “never-wash philosophy”.
彼の生デニム仲間の中には、さらに進んで、彼曰く「洗わない哲学」を守る者もいる。
“[For one of them], in very tight spaces like a small elevator or something like that, if the dude is wearing certain pairs you can smell it a little bit,” he says.
「（彼らの中には）狭いエレベーターのような狭い空間で、彼がそういうのを履いていると少し匂うよ」と彼。
“Some of his best faded examples are also displayed in jeans trade shows.
「ジーンズの見本市でも、彼の色あせた最高のデニムがいくつか展示されている。

香りが・・・
It’s not an unpleasant smell, per se, but it’s a smell.”
まあ不快な匂いではないけど、匂うよ。」
・・・ちょっと笑いながら読んでしまいました。
人が大切にしている事って、色んな種類があるんだなあと改めて思います。
置いてあるだけで匂うズボンを受け入れてくれる、奥さんの度量が広い！
リーバイスとかエドウィンなんかが、インディゴ染料を落とさない洗剤を開発したら、すごく売れそうです。
というか、CEOもその方が快適なんじゃないかと思いますが（笑）、難しいんですかね。
彼らのカッコいいデニムへの情熱に敬服します。
理由は単純明快！「少ないコストでしっかり楽しく学べるから」。
