先日から「The Arctic Circle: A new frontier for sustainable wine -「北極圏：サステイナブルワインの新たなフロンティア」を読んでいます。

Diversification is the key to resilience, and the experimentation happening just below the Arctic Circle might provide valuable lessons to other emerging wine regions around the world.
多様化は復活力の鍵であり、北極圏で行われている実験は、世界中の他の新興ワイン産地に貴重な教訓をもたらすかもしれない。

“I don’t necessarily think it will be the great new wine region of the future,” said Karlsson.
「必ずしも、未来の偉大な新ワイン産地になるとは思っていません」とカールッソン氏。

“But it is a really interesting place where people will continue to experiment with new kinds of varieties, which will potentially bring big benefits to the rest of the world.”
「しかし、新品種の実験が出来るとても興味深い場所であり、それは世界の他の地域にも大きな利益をもたらす可能性があります。」

In keeping with this spirit, Serner and Guerra at Långmyre Vineri in Gotland have chosen not to put all their grapes in one basket.
この精神に則り、ゴットランド島のローングマイル・ヴィネリのセイナーとゲラは、全てのブドウを一つのバスケットに入れないことを選択した。

Instead of defaulting to Solaris, the cultivar of choice in Scandinavia
北欧で主流のソラリス種を主力とするのではなく、

- they have a selection of five different hybrid grapes including a dark grape called Merlot Kanthus, which is a crossing with Merlot.
メルローと交配した黒ブドウ、メルロー・カンサスなど5種類の交配種ブドウを揃えている。

“In a blind tasting with a Merlot grown in the same conditions, you would never be able to tell the difference,” Serner said.
「同条件で栽培されたメルローとブラインドテイスティングをしても、その違いはわからないでしょう」とセイナー。

“Sweden is such a young wine country that it’s too soon to already have one variety that we all grow.”
「スウェーデンは非常に若いワイン生産国ですから、皆が育てる品種を一つに絞ってしまうのは早計です。」

It’s been six years since Serner and Guerra first met.
セイナーとゲラが初めて出会ってから6年。

Now, they’re engaged to be married, and it’s safe to say they have achieved their dream of making wine with minimal impact to the environment.
現在は二人は婚約中で、環境への影響を最小限に抑えたワイン作りという夢は実現したと言っていい。

Their vineyard is certified organic in Sweden under KRAV standards, one of the strictest ecolabelling schemes in existence.
彼らのブドウ畑は、スウェーデンで最も厳しいエコラベル制度の一つであるKRAV基準のオーガニック認証を取得している。

“Sweden will definitely continue to be one of the most sustainable wine countries in the world because we’re all growing resistant varieties,” said Serner.
「スウェーデンでは抵抗力のある品種を育てていますから、間違いなく世界で最もサステナブルなワイン生産国の一つであり続けるでしょう」とセイナー。

“Even though we’re not all certified, the practices and the vineyards are organic.”
「全員が認証を受けていないにしても、取り組み方やブドウ畑は自然に根差しています。」

白ワインの品種はかなりスウェーデンで普及しているのに比べ、赤ワインの品種は少なそうだなと思っていたら、ちゃんとセイナーさんはそこに対応していました。

確かに一種類だけを皆が植えてしまうと、もしその品種が病気になったりしたときに、国中のブドウ畑が壊滅状態にもなりえます。

そのリスクに対してしっかり先手を打っている二人のワイン作りは、今後も長く続いていきそうですね。
