今日から「Five must-read books from Japanese literature – 日本文学で読むべき５冊」を読んでいます。

Although Japanese culture can be conceptualised as refined minimalism, the language, on the other hand, is complexity itself.
日本文化は洗練されたミニマリズムと考えられがちだが、一方その言語はとても複雑だ。

conceptualise「考えを持つ」。

Written Japanese has not one but three sets of characters.
日本語は１つではなく、３つの文字を使って書かれる。

Kanji, derived from Chinese, and what are known as the Japanese alphabets – hiragana and katakana.
中国から伝来した漢字、そして日本の文字である平仮名とカタカナだ。

Added to that, formal versus informal tones of the language make the narrative voice either too austere or too casual.
それに加えて、敬語とくだけた言葉の対比によって、物語の語り口は仰々しくも、くだけ過ぎにもなる。

austere「おごそか、厳しい、厳格な、禁欲的な」。

narrative voice「物語の声、語り口」。

Translating texts from Japanese to English surprisingly does away with all such difficulties.
日本語文を英語文に訳す際には、そうした難しさをようやく取り除いてなされるのだ。

away with～「～を取り除く・追い払う」。

And while the essence of novels in Japanese can be quite hard to grasp sometimes,

English fills the gaps that were lost in cultural subtlety (and let’s face it, kanji).
失われてしまう文化的な趣を英語で補うこともある（白状しよう、漢字のことだ）。

Even in translation there is a flow of words that is unique to the Japanese writer.
例え翻訳版であっても、そこには日本人作家特有の弁舌がある。

be unique to～「～に特有の・独特の、～が特徴の」。

It seems strange that English would unlock the mystery of the Japanese sentiment, yet this enigma is precisely so Japanese.
日本人の情緒を英語で紐解くことが出来たとしても、依然として不可思議さが残るのは日本語ならではと言えよう。

The recommended books are all available in English – many translated by Japan enthusiasts, guiding our understanding with added definitions and helpful footnotes.
ここに推奨する本はいずれも英訳版、その多くは日本通の人々によるものが出ており、追加の定義や理解を助ける補足がついている。

definition「定義、（レンズ・録音・テレビ等の）鮮明度、精細度」。

footnote「脚注、補足、付随的な事件」。


narrative voice は「物語・小説の声」、読んでいる書物から読者に伝わってくる声、といった意味になるようで、ここでは「語り口」としました。

この語句を調べていたら神戸大学の研究論文を見つけて、読んでみたらとても面白かったです。

Shegave up tryingtomake friendswith him という文章を、普通に日本語にすれば「彼 女は彼と仲良くなるのをあきらめた」となります。

これを作家（論文内では村上春樹）の感性を通して訳すと「この人とは仲良くなれそうにもないな、と彼女はあきらめた」になると。

こういった読み手を引き込む翻訳が、日本語から英語でも行われているんでしょうね。
