BBCを英語で読む「“愛している”となかなか言わないフランス人」（２）

昨日から「Why the French rarely say ‘I love you’ -「“愛している”となかなか言わないフランス人」を読んでいます。

The French don’t say, “I love you” because they don’t have a verb to express heartfelt sentiments for the people they care about.
フランス人が「愛している」と言わないのは、大切な人への心からの想いを表現する動詞を持たないためだ。

heartfelt「（言葉・行動・行為などが）心からの」。

There is only the verb “aimer”, which means both “to like” and “to love”.
「好き」と「愛する」の両方の意味を持つ aimer という動詞があるのみ。

As a result, a French person is not exaggerating when they conjugate “aimer” to explain their relationship to rugby, a warm baguette or the smell of lilacs.
そのため、フランス人がラグビーや温かいバゲット、ライラックの香りとの関係を説明するのに「aimer」を活用するのは、決して大げさなことではない。

conjugate「（動詞を）活用・変化させる、接合する、対になった、同根・同語源の」。

Naturally, then, it feels trite and rather mundane to use the same word when describing intense feelings of love for one’s newborn baby, a childhood friend or a life partner.
となれば自然と、生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんや幼なじみ、人生の伴侶への強い愛情を表現するのに、同じ言葉を使うのは陳腐で、むしろ平凡な感じがしてくる。

trite「ありふれた、使い古された」。

mundane「平凡な、ありふれた、現世の、世俗的な」。

Looking at Larousse’s online French-English dictionary helps understand how the French do talk about love.
ラルースのオンライン仏英辞典を見れば、彼らが愛をどう語っているかが分かる。

Here, the transitive verb is defined as “aimer”, but the examples listed of how to express that love show how rarely it is used.
他動詞は「aimer」と定義されているが、その愛の表現例を見ると、いかに稀にしか使われないかが分かる。

According to Larousse, when talking about love for a sport or a food, the proper French term would be passion.
ラルースによると、スポーツや食べ物への愛を語る場合、フランス語では passion「情熱」が適切らしい。

Love at first sight is a coup de foudre (lightning strike);
一目惚れは coup de foudre「落雷」、

letters are signed affectueusement (affectionately);
手紙の締めには affectueusement「愛情を込めて」、

affectionate「情の深い、優しい、優しくて、愛情のこもった」。

and the love of your life is simply the homme ou femme de ma vie (man or woman of my life).
そして人生の伴侶は、単に homme ou femme de ma vie「私の人生の男性 / 女性」となる。

なるほど、aimer「愛する」という言葉が広く使われ過ぎているので、本当に深い愛を表現する時は、むしろ別の言葉を使いたくなる、と。

英語の love も相当広く使われていますが、英語圏の人はこの感覚あるんでしょうかね？

夏目漱石が I love you を「月が綺麗ですね」と訳したという話（事実ではないという話もあるようです）、それを思い出しました。

愛を表現するのに「愛」という言葉では何か違う、という感覚、言葉にこだわる人の共通点を感じたのかもしれませんね。
