古伊万里は17世紀に作られた磁器だが、今も日本で愛されている。
When Hikaru Maeda opened her antique business 40 years ago, demand for these old plates and bowls was good – and continues to be strong today.
40年前に前田ひかるさんが骨董品店を開いた頃、古い皿や椀には需要があり、現在もその勢いは衰えていない。
With porcelains as delicate as this, over the years, it is natural to expect that some plates will be broken.
こうした繊細な磁器は、長い年月を経ると、当然ながら割れてしまう皿も出てくる。
What is interesting about ko-imari is that breakages to a certain extent don’t matter.
面白いことに古伊万里は、ある程度の破損は問題にならない。
Of course, the price of the plate will decrease, but its sentimental value might not change.
もちろん皿の値段は下がるが、その情緒的な価値は変わらない。
Perhaps this is why the style still proves popular.
だからこそ今でも古伊万里は人気なのかもしれない。
There is a specific way of repairing ko-imari, called kintsugi, which involves sealing cracks with lacquer that is then coloured with gold or silver dust.
古伊万里の修理には金継ぎと呼ばれる、ひび割れを漆で塞ぎ、金や銀の粉で彩色する方法がある。
It creates an appearance of veins of rare metal running through the porcelain.
これは磁器の中を貴金属の筋が走っているように見える。
The result can be even more beautiful than the original.
その結果、オリジナルよりも美しさが増すこともある。
“I myself have broken a plate valued at around 200,000 yen ($1890;£1,500) and have repaired it two, three times,” says Maeda.
「私自身、20万円ほどのお皿を割ってしまい、2、3回修理したことがあります」と前田さん。
“I both use it and enjoy it as an artifact of beauty.”
「使うだけでなく、工芸の美しさも楽しめます。」
artifact「（天然物に対して）人工物、工芸品、芸術品、(自然の遺物に対して)人工遺物、文化遺物」。
Ko-imari is so highly prized in Japan because its aesthetics can be enjoyed in daily life without too much worrying about wearing it out.
古伊万里が日本で珍重されているのは、その美しさを日常生活の中で消耗をあまり気にせずに楽しめるからだろう。
aesthetic「（特に芸術の）美の、審美的な、美的感覚のある、美学の」。
昔はそれこそイギリスのアンティーク家具などに憧れましたし、実物を見ればもちろん素敵ですが、いざ日本の家屋に合わせるとなると、調和させるセンスが必要と気づきました（笑）。
木の色からしてまず違う（当たり前だけど）ので、その辺も考慮しないとなりませんし、良いものはやはり価格も20万円前後からという感じで、簡単には手が出せません。
日本の家屋には、やはり日本の家具が合わせやすいし、少々の傷や劣化を許容出来れば、価格もそこまで高くないので、ここ数年、骨董市などを見て回っています。
アンティークにはイケアやニトリでは手に入らない独特の趣があり、ファンも多いはずですが、今の「使い捨て時代」に、骨董品はどんな道を歩むのでしょうか？
