昨日から「Meet Japan’s first female bathhouse artist -「日本初の女性銭湯アーティスト」を読んでいます。

And while there used to be dozens of sento mural painters, today only three specialists in Japan continue this ancient artform.
またかつては数十人いた銭湯の壁画師も、現在では日本で3人の専門家のみがこの古典芸術を継承している。

mural「壁の（ような）、壁に掛けた・描いた、体腔・血管の壁に生じる・関する、壁画、天井画」。

One is 83 years old.
一人は83歳。

Another is 73.
もう一人は73歳。

At 36, Tanaka isn’t just the youngest:
36歳の田中さんは、最年少というだけではない、

she’s Japan’s first and only female sento master, and she’s made it her mission to restore these beloved bathhouses to their former glory.
彼女は日本初で唯一の女性銭湯壁画師であり、銭湯の復活を使命としている。

For the last six years, Tanaka has been driving up and down Japan in her old white truck, scraping off the peeling paint of faded bathhouse murals of yesteryear and refreshing the tiles in an effort to preserve this age-old art for future generations
田中さんはこの6年間、古い白いトラックで日本中を走り回り、往年の色あせた銭湯の壁画を削り、タイルを綺麗にし、この古い芸術を後世に残そうと努力してきた

yesteryear「過去、従来、去年、先年、往年」。

- and she doesn’t have much time.
彼女には時間がないのだ。

Since most sento can’t afford to close more than once a week, Tanaka must start and finish each project in a single day.
一般的な銭湯は週に何日も休めないので、田中さんは一つの仕事を一日で終わらせねばならない。

She arrives at each bathhouse early in the morning, lays wooden planks over the pools to form a walkway,
彼女は朝早くから銭湯に来て、湯船の上に木板を敷いて通路を作り、

mixes her colours and then climbs ladders or balances on upside-down crates to reach her floor-to-ceiling canvases.
色を混ぜ、梯子を登り、逆さまの木箱の上でバランスをとりながら、床から天井までのキャンバスに手を伸ばす。

全てを一日で終らせる！！

考えてみればそうか～、しかしかなりのスピードが要求されますよね。

絵具（ペンキ？）も営業再開までに乾いてないと困りますし・・・しかし女性にとっては結構な重労働のように思います。

自分なりの技と工夫で効率的に仕事をなさっているんでしょうね。
