先日から「Meet Japan’s first female bathhouse artist -「日本初の女性銭湯アーティスト」を読んでいます。

Many of Tanaka’s murals, like the one inside the Taishoyu sento, are massive scenes splashed across 8m walls.
田中さんの壁画の多くは、大正湯の銭湯画のように、8mの壁面に巨大な情景を散りばめている。

She estimates it will take her about 11 hours of work to complete this faraway fairy tale,
彼女は、このどこか遠くのおとぎの国の完成には約11時間かかると見積もっている、

but knows that for most bathers, stepping into a sento is an escape from the outside world, and her murals are an essential part of that experience.
だが多くの入浴客にとって、銭湯とは外界からの逃避であり、彼女の壁画はその体験に不可欠であると理解している。

“After a long day or when you’re feeling down, and there’s this really bright sky and landscape, you feel uplifted,” Tanaka said.
「一日の終わりや落ち込んでいる時に、この明るい空と風景を見たら元気になってくれる」と田中さん。

“That’s why I do this.”
「そのためにやっています。」

Sento date to the spread of Buddhism across Japan during the 700s, when cleansing one’s body and spirit was thought to be an important duty for those serving Buddha.
銭湯は、仏教が日本に広まった700年代、仏に仕える者にとって身心を清める事が重要な任務とされたところから始まる。

Originally only found in large temples, these communal steam baths eventually extended to the paying public,
元々は大きな寺にしかなかった共同蒸し風呂が、やがてお金を払って大衆も入るようになり、

and during the 1200s, the term ‘sento’ (literally: ‘coin bath’) was introduced.
1200年代には「銭湯（文字通り、小銭の風呂）」という言葉も登場した。

According to the Tokyo Sento Association, by the early 1600s, each Tokyo neighbourhood had its own bathhouse, and many were adorned with nature scenes on the walls.
東京銭湯組合によると、1600年代初頭には東京の各地区に銭湯が存在し、その多くは壁に自然の風景が描かれていたという。

By 1810, records show there were 523 sento in the city, yet it wasn’t until the Meiji period starting in 1868 that the modern sento took shape:
1810年には市内に523軒の銭湯があったと記録されているが、近代銭湯の形が整うのは1868年、明治時代に入ってからで、

separate men’s and women’s entrances and naked bathing areas, recessed tubs, high ceilings and paintings often depicting Japan’s most enduring and powerful landmark: Mount Fuji.
男女別の入口と裸で入る浴室、埋め込み式の浴槽、高い天井、そして日本の最も永続的で強力な風景、富士山を描いた絵画がよく見られる。

銭湯のもとはお寺にあった共同蒸し風呂で、それが徐々に日本に広まっていったと。

今でこそ自宅にお風呂があって当たり前、ですが、私が幼いころは東京でも結構銭湯を見かけたので、当時は風呂なしアパートもたくさんあったんでしょう。

わざわざお風呂を外で入ってくる、というのがどうも個人的に面倒で苦手なんですが、子供が泳いでいたりして（笑）行けば楽しいところですよね。
