And if the estimates are accurate, it means there are a lot of hungry mouths prowling the countryside.

Cats are natural, patient hunters, and have had an outsized effect on New Zealand flightless bird population.
猫は生まれつきの忍耐強いハンターであり、ニュージーランドの飛べない鳥の個体数に多大な影響を及ぼしている。
“They’ve directly contributed to the extinction of 11 bird species, and possibly contributed to the extinction of 10 more,” Geary says.
「鳥類11種の絶滅に直接的に関わり、さらに10種の絶滅に寄与した可能性があります」とギアリー氏。
“And now, those more vulnerable species have gone they’ve moved on to eating everything else – lizards, and vertebrates, and endangered native bats.”

腹ペコ野猫が250万匹・・・彼らがお腹を満たそうと思えば、ニュージーランドの野生種が全滅しかねない。
どんな手を打つのか分かりませんが、早急に数を減らすことは難しそうですね。
理由は単純明快！「少ないコストでしっかり楽しく学べるから」。
