先日から「How to tip around the world -「世界のチップ事情」を読んでいます。

Egypt

A deeply entrenched social norm in North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia is the concept of baksheesh, meaning a tip or charitable alms.
北アフリカ、中東、南アジアで深く根付いている社会規範が、チップや慈善施しを意味するバクシーシという概念である。

entrench「塹壕で囲む、塹壕を掘って身を隠す、身を守る、自分の立場を固める」。

alms「施し物、義援金」。

It can be solicited outright by a taxi driver or tour guide, or whispered suggestively from a street corner bazaar, but ultimately means the same thing:
タクシーの運転手やツアーガイドからストレートにせがまれることもあれば、街角のバザールから思わせぶりに請われることもあるが、最終的には同じ意味で、

solicit「懇請する、せがむ、誘う、声をかける」。

a present or small tip is called for, regardless of the service given.
サービス内容に関わらず、プレゼントか少額のチップを要求されるのだ。

Wrongly interpreted it can be translated as begging.
解釈を間違えれば、物乞いとも訳される。

But giving alms to the poor is one of the five tenets of Islam
だが貧しい人々に施しをすることはイスラム教の5つの教義の1つであり、

and understanding that will deepen a traveller’s grasp of this part of the world, with the benefactor supposedly made holier by the action.
施した者はその行為によって神聖さを増すとされる事を知ると、旅行者はこの地域のことをより深くつかめるだろう。

In Egypt, such handouts are commonplace for restaurant workers, taxi drivers, tour guides and hotel staff, but also door openers, bathroom attendants, security personnel and shopkeepers.
エジプトでは、レストラン従業員、タクシー運転手、ツアーガイド、ホテルスタッフだけでなく、ドア係、トイレ係、警備員、店員などにもこうした手当てが当たり前のように渡される。

A deeper look at baksheesh also reveals it is part of a loosely defined pay-it-forward system,
バクシーシをより深く観察すると、それは緩やかに定義された恩送りの仕組みの一部であることが分かり、

in which tour guides and hotel concierges from Cairo to Aswan can give preferential treatment, ensure top-notch service and grant favours if tipped in advance.
カイロからアスワンまで、ツアーガイドやホテルのコンシェルジュに事前にチップを渡せば優遇され、一流のサービスを保証され、便宜を図ってもらうこともできる。

Dollars are welcome, as are Egyptian Pounds, and US$1-2 (or E£30-40) is enough to let loose a welcome grin.
米ドルもエジプト・ポンドも歓迎され、1～2ドルで歓迎の笑みがこぼれるだろう。

何をするにもチップ、というのも、個人的にはどうも煩わしく思ってしまうんですが、違う文化圏の違う考えに基づく仕組みであると理解すれば、その違和感も旅の情緒に切り替わるのでしょうね。

エジプトはいつか訪れてみたい場所なので、覚えておきたいと思います。
