先日から「The Pursuit of Love: Britain’s most scandalous family -「愛の追跡：英国で最もスキャダラスな一族」を読んでいます。

This lack of empathy came out much worse, however, in Diana and Unity Mitford.
しかしこの共感性の欠如は、ダイアナとユニティではより一層ひどくなっている。

Does it seem “too much”, to adopt a Mitfordism, to call them the Traitors of the family?
ミットフォードの流儀に則って、彼女らを一族の裏切り者と呼ぶのは「度が過ぎる」だろうか？

Diana and her first husband Bryan Guinness were the toast of the Bright Young Things in 1920s London:

the toast「乾杯を受ける人、人気者、花形」。

they inspired Evelyn Waugh’s novel Vile Bodies, which he dedicated to them.

But Diana, attracted to power as all the Mitfords were, fell in love with Sir Oswald Mosley,

Both Mosley and Diana were imprisoned during the war on suspicion of sharing information with the Nazis (it was Nancy who informed on Diana),

and for the rest of her life she refused to disavow her support for fascism or admiration for Hitler before the war.

disavow「否認する、責任・関係を否認する」。

“Being hated means nothing to me, as you know,” she said.
「ご存知のように、嫌われる事は私にとって何でもありません」と彼女は言っている。

姉妹たちは学校教育を受けておらず、型にはまっていない分、破天荒な生き方を選ぶ可能性も高かったのかもしれませんね。

「裏切者」とは言葉が強いと思いましたが、少しそう呼ばれた理由が見えてきた気がします。
