今日から「The reasons humans started kissing -「キスの起源」を読んでいます。

Less than half of all societies kiss with their lips, according to a study of 168 cultures from around the world.

世界168の文化を調査した結果によると、唇でキスをする社会は、全体の半分以下であるらしい。

William Jankowiak, a professor of anthropology at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, found that only 46% use lip-to-lip kissing in a romantic sense, excluding things like parent-child kissing or greetings.

ネバダ大学ラスベガス校の人類学教授、ウィリアム・ヤンコヴィヤク氏によると、親子間のキスや挨拶などを除き、ロマンチックな意味で唇と唇でキスをする人は46％しか居なかったという。

Two theories for why humans have a need to kiss stem from the idea that as babies we have an innate liking for lip touching.

人間がキスをする理由として推測されるまず一つは、赤ちゃんの頃から先天的に唇を触るのが好きだという説。

stem from～「～に由来する・起因する」。 innate「生来の、生得の、天賦の、先天的な」。

In one case, it might be that we associate lip touching with breastfeeding, and that reflex is innate in everyone.

ある事例として、唇を触る事は母乳のイメージと結びつくかもしれず、その反射作用は誰にも備わっているものだろう。

There is also a suggestion that mothers and their children bond over lip-on-lip kissing because of something called "premastication food transfer".

そしてもう一つは、母と子が唇を重ねてキスをすることで絆が深まる「噛み砕いた食べ物を与える行為」から来るという説。

mastication「咀嚼、噛み砕き」。

The mothers of our ancient ancestors might have pre-chewed our food for us in our early years, and transferred it directly into our mouths.

私たちの祖先の母親は、幼少期の子供のためにあらかじめ食べ物を噛み砕き、直接口移しで食べさせてくれたのかもしれない。

This is something that is seen in our closest ancestors - chimpanzees - as well as other great apes.

これは人間に最も近い祖先であるチンパンジーや、他の類人猿にも見られる行為だ。

great ape「大型類人猿」。 今は、大人の噛み砕いた物を赤ちゃんにあげてはいけない（虫歯菌がうつるから）と言われていますが、昭和の時代は、結構やっていたかも。 現代の基準では原始的で清潔ではないかもしれないけど、古代の昔から子供を生かすために本能的にしていた事だったのかなと、そんな気がしますね。 便利な離乳食もない時代のお母さんは、子供が食べやすいよう、そんな風にご飯をあげていた、人が愛情表現としてキスをするのはその名残ではないか、という説。 今回のは短いコラムですが、先を読んでいきましょう！
