先日から「Why ‘quirky’ people are attractive -「変わり者は魅力的」を読んでいます。

When it comes to attractive qualities that are under our control, like grooming choices and fashions,
身だしなみやファッションなど、自分でコントロールできる魅力的な資質の場合、

stable groups of anti-conformists can exist in populations of conformists.
順応者の集団の中に反体制者の安定群が存在することがある。

conformist「（法律・慣行などに）従う人、遵奉者、順応者、英国国教徒」。

Imagine a family growing up in a city where two rival football teams play: Team A and Team B.
ライバル関係にあるサッカーチーム、ＡとＢが争う街で育った家族を想像してみよう。

On both sides of the family there are supporters for each.
家族には各々両チームのサポーターがいる。

A child in the family has a choice about which team to support
子どもは、どちらのチームをサポートするかを選べる

(let’s ignore for a second the option of supporting neither or hating football completely).
（どちらも支持しない、またはサッカーが嫌いという選択肢はひとまず無視で）。

One option they could go for is to support the most popular, therefore conforming and upsetting the fewest family members.
選択肢の一つは、最も人気の側について多数派に回り、少数派の家族を揺さぶること。

Or, they could choose to be anti-conformist.
または、反体側を選ぶこともできる。

“Individuals sample a number of role models from the previous generation, count the number of As and Bs in their sample, and then adopt either A or B depending on these counts and their degree of conformity or anti-conformity,” says Kaleda Krebs Denton, a PhD student in biology at Stanford University.
「個人は前世代のロールモデルをいくつか抽出し、その中のＡとＢの数を数え、その数と順応・反体制の度合いに応じてどちらかを採用します」と語るのは、スタンフォード大学で生物学の博士課程に在籍するカレダ・クレブス・デントン氏。

If the child has two A supporters and one B supporter in their family, and is conformist, in all probability they will support A.
もしその子の家族にＡチーム派が２人、Ｂチーム派が１人いて、その子が順応者であれば、確率的にはＡチームを支持するだろう。

If they are non-conformist, they might support B.
もし反体制者なら、Ｂを支持するかもしれない。

これは生まれ持っての気質というのがありますよね～、例え同じ両親の元に育っていても、多数派を選ぶか少数派を選ぶかは、本当に個性によって違います。

conformist「（慣習や体制等に）従う・順応する人」 と non(anti)-conformist「従わない・抗う人」、幼いころからの自分を振り返ってみて、あなたはどちらでしょうか？

まあ non(anti)-conformist はカッコ良いけれど、生きづらそうでもあり。

そこが魅力に繋がるという話になっていくんでしょうかね。
