先日から「Meet Japan’s first female bathhouse artist -「日本初の女性銭湯アーティスト」を読んでいます。

“There are lots of people who haven’t been to sento before, so it’s about getting them interested to begin with,” Tanaka said.
「銭湯に行ったことがない人も多いので、まずは興味を持ってもらうところからです」と田中さん。

“I recently learned that when I’ve done workshops with children, they started going to the sento after participating, even though they had never been to one until then.
「最近知ったんですが、子どもたちとワークショップをすると、それまで行ったことがなかったのに、参加後に銭湯に行くようになったそうです。

It’s a small step, but I do think it’s gradually leading towards something.”
小さな一歩ですが、少しずつ何かにつながるような気がしています。」

While attending one of these events a few years ago, Tanaka met handyman Komamura Yoshikazu.
数年前、そうしたイベントで彼女は、便利屋の駒村佳和さんと出会った。

She was there to discuss sento culture, and he had built the stage.
彼女は銭湯文化を語る側で参加し、彼はその舞台の設営をしていた。

The two soon fell in love, married, and today she and Yoshikazu travel up and down Japan as part of a sento painting partnership:
2人はすぐに恋に落ち、結婚し、現在は佳和さんと共に銭湯画のパートナーとして日本全国を旅しており、

she does the painting, and he builds the wooden stages and metal scaffolding where she works.
彼女が絵を描き、彼が木製の舞台や金属の足場を作る。

scaffolding「（建築現場などの）足場、足場材料」。

“I drive, I carry heavy things and I try to support her,” Yoshikazu smiled.
「僕は運転したり、重いものを運んだり、彼女を支えようとしています」と、佳和さんは微笑んだ。

As Tanaka sweeps her brush across the painted valleys on the women’s side of the Taishoyu bathhouse,
田中さんが大正湯の女湯で筆を走らせ谷を描いている間に、

Yoshikazu has already laid a planked walkway over the pools on the men’s side and readied her paint on a makeshift stand.
佳和さんは既に男湯の上に板を敷き終え、仮設台に絵の具の準備を整える。

There’s no time to waste:
無駄にしている時間はないのだ、

It’s 13:30, half of the mural still remains to be done and the sento is scheduled to open the next day.
今は13時半、作業はまだ半分残っており、銭湯は翌日開く予定である。

まさかの急展開、銭湯が縁となり良い出会いが、そしてご結婚！

最初、田中さんが大学時代に銭湯画に強く惹かれたのは、何か運命のようなものだったのかも・・・。

心強いパートナーを得て、銭湯画を後世に伝える試みは二人三脚になったのですね。
