But though there are thousands of commercial cleaning products out there, many influencers choose to use vinegar.
市販の洗剤は何千種類もあるのに、多くのインフルエンサーが酢を使うことを選んでいる。

From de-greasing windows to washing strawberries or transforming toilets, it seems there is nothing this household ingredient can’t do.
窓の油膜落としからイチゴ洗い、トイレの大変身まで、この家庭用食材に出来ないことはないらしい。

It’s being added to dishwashers, washing machines, and even used by scientists to disinfect laboratories.
食器洗いや洗濯にも加えられたり、科学者が実験室の消毒に使ったりもしている。

But what makes it so versatile?
だがお酢の何がそんなに万能なのだろうか？

Vinegar is made via a two-step fermentation process.
酢は2段階の発酵工程を経て作られる。

First, carbohydrates of any kind are fed to yeast cells, which turn their sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide.
まずはあらゆる種類の炭水化物を酵母細胞に与え、酵母細胞はその糖分をアルコールと炭酸ガスに変える。

This alcohol is then exposed to oxygen and fermented again, this time with the bacteria Acetobacter instead of yeast,
このアルコールを酸素に触れさせ、今度は酵母の代わりにアセトバクターという細菌で再び発酵させると・・・

and voila – the alcoholic liquid is turned into a mixture of water and acetic acid.
ほら、アルコール液が水と酢酸の混合液になるのだ。

It’s the same phenomenon that produces the sour flavour in wine that might have been accidentally been left open overnight.
これは一晩ボトルを開けっ放しにしたワインに酸味が出るのと同じ現象だ。

春はスプリング・クリーニングの季節。

日本では年末が大掃除の時期ですが、ヨーロッパでは春、暗くて寒い冬が明け、花々も咲いてきて、明るくウキウキした気分の時に大掃除をするみたいですね。

お酢を使った掃除がそんなトレンドになっているとは知りませんでした（笑）。
