However, Smith’s situation is different.
しかしスミスの場合は事情が異なる。

At GIA, he has access to one of the largest collections of diamonds on the planet
GIAでは、地上最大級のダイヤモンド・コレクションの一つにアクセス可能で

- millions of gems that have been sent there to be valued, so that they can be insured or sold.
数百万という宝石が、保険や売却のための評価付けに送られてくる。

“If you want to see something rare and unusual, this is the perfect place to go because there are diamonds coming through here all the time,” says Smith.
「珍しい石を見たいなら最高の場所です、ここには常にダイヤモンドが行き交いますからね」とスミス。

“Every few days, you might get to borrow a diamond for maybe a few hours, maybe a day or two and study it.”
「数日に一度、数時間から1～2日程度、ダイヤモンドを借りて研究もできるかもしれません。」

A few years earlier, this is exactly what Smith had done.
数年前まで、まさに彼がやっていたことだ。

Together with an international team of scientists, he casually requisitioned 53 of the largest, clearest and most expensive available – including some from the same mine as the Cullinan diamond

- and took them back to his laboratory to view under a microscope.
自身の研究所に持ち帰って顕微鏡で観察した。

What Smith found was revolutionary.
この時スミスが発見したのは、革命的なことだった。

Nearly three-quarters of the Clippir diamonds contained tiny pockets, or “inclusions” of metal that had avoided rusting – not something you’d find in ordinary ones
クリッパーダイヤの4分の3近くには、普通のダイヤモンドにはない、錆びずに残った金属の小さなポケット（内包物）があり、

- while the remaining 15 contained a kind of garnet which only forms within the Earth’s mantle, the layer above its molten core.
残りの15個には、地球の溶けた核の上層・マントルでしか出来ないガーネットの一種が含まれていたのだ。

なるほど～、カリナンほど大きなダイヤは、人間が到達できない地球の深層の一部を含んでいて、そこには誰も見た事のない世界が広がっている・・・という感じでしょうか。

こういう話を聞くと、やはり天然宝石にはロマンがあるなあと感じます。

ましてや研究者ならば、きっと強い興味を惹かれる対象でしょうね。
