ちょっと変わった作品を見たいなら・・・
Well, all the Ghibli films are different, but two stand out as being animated in a completely different style to the studio’s usual look.
ジブリ作品はどれも一味違っているが、この2作品は他のジブリ作品とは全く毛色が違っている。
The Tale of Princess Kaguya is one of the more recent movies, released in 2013 and based on the folk story The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.
「かぐや姫の物語」は２つのうちの新しい方で、公開は2013年、原作は昔話の竹取物語だ。
The final film directed by Takahata before his death in 2018, it’s about a poor couple who find a tiny girl growing inside a bamboo shoot, and it is almost like an old painting come to life.
2018年に亡くなった高畑勲氏の遺作で、竹の中で光り輝く小さな女の子を見つけた貧しい夫婦の物語、まるで絵画に命を吹き込んだような作品だ。
Similarly, My Neighbours The Yamadas (1999) is a charming little tale that starts as a family comedy before heading into surreal territory, yet is always warm and happy, more like an animated comic strip.
同様に「となりの山田くん（1999）」は、彼がシュール路線に向かう以前の作品で、愛らしくも楽しい家族の物語、あたたかく幸せな連載漫画のような作品だ。

猫が出てくる作品を見たいなら・・・
And, let’s face it, who doesn’t?
もはや認めるしかない。
We’ve already mentioned Catbus, but The Cat Returns (2002) is the moggy’s pyjamas for feline fans.
すでに猫バスには触れたが、この「猫の恩返し（2002）」は、猫好きにはたまらない作品だ。
moggy「雑種の猫、だらしない女」。
cat’s pajamas「すばらしいもの」。
the moggy(cat)’s pyjamas「すばらしい、たまらない、最高」。
こんなモフモフな表現が英語にあったんですね～、カワイイっ。
It’s a heartwarming fantasy about a young girl who can talk to cats,
猫と話が出来る少女の心温まる物語で、
and after she saves what appears to be a street cat from being hit by a truck she gets inducted into the often perilous world of the Cat Kingdom.
トラックに引かれそうになった野良猫を助けたことから、冒険的な猫の王国に引き入れられる。
induct into～「就任させる、入れる、徴兵する」。
perilous「きわどい、危険な、冒険的な」。
Pure escapism, and nothing wrong with that.
これは純粋な空想物語で、それで一向に構わない。
escapism「現実逃避、空想、白昼夢」。
And one character is a dapper puss called The Baron, a statuette who comes to life.
登場人物の一人が、粋なネコのバロン、生きている彫像だ。
dapper「粋な、服装がこざっぱりした、敏捷な」。
puss「ネコちゃん、小娘」。
statuette「小さな彫像、小塑像」。
In a rare Ghibli crossover, the Baron statue also appears in Whisper of the Heart.
ジブリ作品には珍しいクロスオーバーで、このバロンは「耳をすませば」にも登場する。
この記事を書いている今、私のヒザには新入りで臆病だった猫が丸くなっております。
ガリガリだったのに、いまやバロンというよりムタさん・・・。
ずっしり重いけれどこんな時間こそが我が家の the cat’s pajamas です。
理由は単純明快！「少ないコストでしっかり楽しく学べるから」。
