先日から「Why are bed bugs so difficult to deal with? -「なぜトコジラミ対策は難しい？」を読んでいます。

“We saw a change in frequency of not the single mutation – the single mutation was always present – but the change in the frequency of having both mutations, so therefore that higher level of resistance,” says Booth.
「単一変異は常に存在していましたが、両方の変異が頻繁に見られ、それがより防御力を高めています」とブース氏。

“Pretty much every bed bug population you see nowadays has both mutations, which is really bad because you’re not going to kill them.
「最近見かけるトコジラミの集団はほとんどが両方の突然変異を持っており、従って駆除しずらいのが本当に厄介です。

It means you can’t go down to your local hardware store and buy an over-the-counter insecticide and expect that to do anything – you really need to get professional pest control.”
つまり近所の金物屋で買ってきた市販の殺虫剤では駄目で、害虫駆除のプロに依頼するしかありません。」

Booth and Lewis attribute this change to this widespread use of common over the counter insecticides.
ブースとルイスはこの変化を、市販の一般的な殺虫剤が広く使われるようになったためだと考えている。

“People don’t want to spend hundreds or thousands treating bedbugs if they think they can go down to the hardware store and buy a $5.99 (£4.90) bottle of insecticide to kill them,” says Booth.
「金物屋にある数ドルの殺虫剤で退治できると思えば、何百、何千ドルもかけてトコジラミを駆除しようとは思わないでしょう」とブース。

“Unfortunately, what they are doing when they do that is selecting for bed bugs with the mutations, eliminating the ones you can kill, but allowing the ones that you can’t kill to thrive.”
「残念ながら、それによって突然変異を持つトコジラミを選別し、殺せるトコジラミは排除し、殺せないトコジラミを繁殖させてしまうのです。」

なるほど・・・殺虫剤を私たちが使うと、弱い個体は死に絶えて、強い個体が残り、それがどんどん繁殖することになる。

それがどんどん虫を強くしていると・・・（ゾワゾワ～）。

変異が急激でないものはともかく、彼らの強さは変異が早いということなんですね。

ウィルスもそうですけど、人間が研究を重ねて対応しても、すぐにまたそれを上回ってくる、この変異をつかさどる根本に作用させる発明があると良いんですが。

まあそれすらも乗り越えてくるのかも、と思うと、物理的に捕獲して焼却するのが意外と一番なのかもしれませんね（それも難しそうですが・汗）。
