If meticulously handcrafted by the finest makers, their value can run to thousands of pounds, and they are reverently handed down from generation to generation.
最高の作り手が細心の注意を払って仕立てた着物ならば、その価値は数千ポンドに達することもあり、世代を超えて大切に受け継がれている。
meticulously「細心の注意を払って、慎重に」。
reverent「崇敬の念を表した、恭しい、敬虔な」。
To western eyes they are the ultimate symbol of Japan, often infused with an exotic fascination derived from misconceived ideas about the geisha.
西洋人の目には着物は日本の究極の象徴と映り、しばしば芸者に関する見当違いの考えからエキゾチックな魅力を吹き込まれてもいる。
infuse with「（人や心を希望で）満たす、～を吹き込む、～を注ぐ」。
derive from～「～に由来する、～から派生する」。
misconceive「誤解する、（誤情報に基づくために情報等が）間違っている、見当違いの」。
Given the kimono’s iconic status it is easy to forget that for the greatest part of their history they have also been a fashion staple, worn on a daily basis by the majority of the population.
この着物の象徴的な地位からすると、その歴史の大半で着物はファッションの定番であり、多くの人々が日常的に着ていた事をつい忘れがちになる。
staple「主要産物、重要商品、（季節や流行を問わない）基本・定番品、要素、主成分、Ｕ字くぎ、またくぎ、かすがい、（ホッチキスの）針」。
Only after the enforced opening of Japan’s borders by the United States in the late 19th Century did the kimono begin to take on a more symbolic role,
19世紀後半にアメリカが強制的に日本を開国させてから、着物の役割はより象徴的なものになり
a shift that reached its apogee in the aftermath of the Pacific War (1941-45) when, defeated and demoralised, the Japanese largely abandoned the kimono in favour of Western fashions.
その変化は太平洋戦争（1941～45）の敗北後、意気消沈した日本人が着物を捨てて洋服を選んだ時に頂点に達した。
apogee「遠地点、最高点、極点、絶頂」。
demoralise「堕落させる、腐敗させる、落胆させる」。
in favour of～「～に賛成・味方して、～の方を選んで、～の利益となるように、～に払い渡すように」。
着物は少し前から若い人にも流行ってきているようですが、体形変化にも調節が利き、身体のラインも拾わないので、年を重ねた方のお洒落にも良いんですよね。
リサイクルショップなどで一式揃えてしまえば、見栄えがする割にリーズナブル。
あとは着付けさえマスターすれば、エコな時代にもぴったりな素晴らしいファッションかもしれません。
