先日から「How jewellery got personal -「宝石が個人の楽しみになるまで」を読んでいます。

All that glitters

Although upcycling and recycling of heirloom pieces is also currently experiencing a surge in popularity, it’s not a new phenomenon.
近頃はアップサイクルや家宝のリサイクルも人気を集めているが、これは新しい現象ではない。

“Recycling gemstones has been going on since Roman times, which is partly why so little jewellery survives outside of royal and museum collections,” says Tricia Topping, Goldsmiths’ Fair ambassador.
「宝石のリサイクルはローマ時代から行われており、それが王室や博物館のコレクション以外のジュエリーがほとんど残っていない理由の一つです」と話すのはゴールドスミス・フェアのアンバサダーを務めるトリシア・トッピング氏。

A wave of repurposing followed the execution of Charles I when Oliver Cromwell had the crown jewels either destroyed or repurposed, and their gold settings turned into coins stamped with ‘Commonwealth of England’.
チャールズ一世が処刑された後、オリバー・クロムウェルは王家の宝飾品を壊すか再利用に回し、金のセッティングは「Commonwealth of England」と刻印されたコインに変えた。

Refashioning jewels was one of the ways that Cartier built its business in the early 20th Century.
宝石のリフォームは、20世紀初頭にカルティエがビジネスを築いた方法の一つだった。

And perhaps the most famous – and controversial – example of a refashioned jewel is that of the Koh-i-Noor.
そして中でも最も有名かつ物議をかもしたのが、コ・イ・ヌールの例だろう。

One of the largest cut diamonds in the world, it was ceded to Queen Victoria after the British annexation of the Punjab in 1849, and exhibited at the 1851 Great Exhibition.
それは世界最大級のカットダイヤモンドで、1849年に英国がパンジャブ地方を併合した際にヴィクトリア女王に譲渡され、1851年の万国博覧会に出品される。

cede to「割譲する、引き渡す、譲る」。

annexation「併合、併合地、付加物」。

At Prince Albert’s insistence, the stone was recut to make it sparkle more, reducing its size dramatically but answering the tastes of the day.
アルバート公の強い要望により、石の輝きを増すために再カットされ、サイズは大幅に縮小されたが、当時の好みには合ったものだった。

of the day「当時の、その時代の」。


コ・イ・ヌールはロンドン塔に展示されているんですよねえ・・・入場料が高いと感じて見に行きませんでした。

いくらだっけと思って調べたら、28.90ポンド（約4,400円）、処刑の展示はあまり興味がないし、高いなあ・・・。

それはともかくもっとキラキラさせたい！というアルバート公の命により、元々186カラットあったコ・イ・ヌールは105カラットになったそうです。

インドからはずっと返還を要求されているものの、イギリスは現在までそれに応じていないとか（そりゃ返したくないだろうなあ・笑）。

世界的にもこんな大きなダイヤ、もうなかなか出てこないのでしょうね。
