先日から「How King Charles’ diamonds reveal Earth’s deep secrets -「チャールズ国王のダイヤモンドが語る地球の深層」を読んでいます。

Every diamond that has ever been sold or worn, except those grown in the laboratory, is at least 990 million years old
これまでに販売され、着用されてきたダイヤモンドは、人工ダイヤを除き、全て少なくとも9億9000万年前のものであり

- formed at a time when strange, spaghetti-like lifeforms, primitive algae, were just beginning to creep onto land.
それはスパゲティーのような奇妙な生命体、原始藻類が陸地に進出し始めた頃に形成されたものだ。

algae「藻類」。

But some are truly ancient, first crystallising at least 3.2 billion years ago, when the entire planet may have been one big ocean – a swirling blue orb with no visible land or continents whatsoever.
しかし中には本当に古いものもあり、少なくとも32億年前、地球全体が一つの大きな海、すなわち陸地や大陸が全く見えない渦巻く青い球体であったかもしれない時代に、初めて結晶化したものもある。

Once a diamond has formed, it takes a sequence of unlikely processes to bring it up to the surface.
ダイヤモンドの形成後、それが地表に出るためには、ありえないような一連のプロセスが必要になる。

First, the natural movement of super-heated rock in the mantle brings it closer to the surface over hundreds of millions of years,
まず最初に、マントル内の超高温の岩石が何億年もかけて自然に移動し、地表に近づいて来る、

possibly as part of giant “plumes” which can stretch thousands of kilometres from the edge of the core to the upper mantle.
恐らく核の端から上部マントルまで数千キロメートルにも及ぶ巨大な「プリューム」の一部として。

plume「むくむくと立ち上るもの、（大きな）羽毛、羽飾り、柱、（マントル）プリューム」。

Then the diamond has to be in the right place at the right time, to be blasted up in magma.
そしてダイヤモンドがマグマで吹き上がるには、適切な場所に適切なタイミングで居なければならない。

“It [the molten liquid] has picked up those diamonds from a variety of different locations and kind of mixed them together,” says Smith.
「それ（溶けた液体）は、様々なな場所からそれらのダイヤモンドを拾い上げ、ある種、それらを混ぜ合わるのです」とスミス。

This diamond-flecked magma then solidifies into rock within the Earth’s crust – specifically one called kimberlite
このダイヤモンドを含んだマグマは地殻の中で固まり、特にキンバーライトと呼ばれる岩石となり

- where the gemstones may be discovered millions of years later.
もしかしたら数百万年後、宝石として発見されるかもしれない。

気が遠くなるような偶然が重なって、ダイヤモンドは誰かの指、あるいは胸元に輝く・・・というわけなんですね。

これは考えてみれば、自分の身の回りに存在する全てに言えることかもしれません。

人、動物、所有する家や物、これらは全て偶然が重なった結果、今自分のそばにある。

この不思議な巡り合わせを人は「縁がある」と表現するのかも・・・？なんて思いました。
