BBCを英語で読む「記憶にないほど奇妙なアカデミー賞」（９）

先日から「Oscars 2021: More strange than any other in living memory -「記憶にないほど奇妙なアカデミー賞」を読んでいます。

Of course, it was always going to be a less spectacular shindig than usual.
もちろん、通常より華やかさに欠けるパーティーにはなるだろう。

shindig「（騒がしい・盛大な）パーティー、宴会、舞踏会」。

Crowds had to be kept away, the customary glad-handing award-season lunches had to be scrapped,
密を避ける必要があり、恒例の昼食会も中止しなければならず

customary「習慣的な、通例・恒例の、慣習上の」。

and, anyway, the studios are understandably holding back their most commercial films until cinemas reopen.
それに映画館の再開まで、スタジオが最も収益を見込めそうな作品を取っておくのも理解できる。

But Soderbergh and his team could have taken the opportunity to remind us of how exciting cinema-going can be.
だがソダーバーグと彼のチームは、映画鑑賞がどれほど心躍るものかを我々に思い出させる機会にも出来たはず。

Instead, their subdued and sober event made Hollywood seem like a nice little cottage industry which produced films for a small, select audience, and didn’t care about selling them to anyone else.
代わりに彼らの控えめで地味なイベントは、ハリウッドを少数の選ばれた観客のために映画を作り、他者に売ることなどどうでもよい、ほのぼのと小規模な家内工業のように見せた。

subdue「征服する、鎮圧する、抑える、抑制する、やわらげる、緩和する」。

cottage industry「家内工業」。

The fairest thing to say is that Academy Awards are rarely very entertaining to watch, but at least this year they were not very entertaining in an unexpected way.
最も公平な言い方をすれば「アカデミー賞は見ていてあまり面白くない」ということだが、少なくとも今年は予想外の形で面白くなかった。

まあ日本も人の事を言っている場合ではなく・・・次は東京オリンピックがこんな論評のターゲットになるのかも。

アカデミー賞は１日で終わるけれど、オリンピックは期間も長いですから、関係者の方々は気の休まる時も無いでしょう。

国際的なイベントはどこも試行錯誤の時期なのでしょうね。
