先日から「The hidden reason processed pet foods are so addictive -「ペットフードにやみつきになる隠れた理由」を読んでいます。

According to Logan, this is not down to the way pet food is formulated, but humans succumbing to their beloved pets’ pleading gazes.
ローガン氏によれば、ペットの肥満はペットフードの調合の問題ではなく、人間が愛しい彼らのおねだりに屈している事によるという。

succumb to～「駆られる、屈従・屈服する、負ける、めげる、倒れる、死ぬ」。

pleading gaze（嘆願・懇願するような視線）＝「おねだり」。

“The reason we make pet food palatable is that if they don’t eat all the food that we give them, it won’t meet the nutritional needs that they require,” he says.
「ペットフードを美味しくするのは、与えたフードを全部食べてくれないと、必要な栄養を満たせないからです」とローガン氏。

“The real problem is owners feeding them too much – pets can’t open the packets themselves.”
「本当の問題は、飼い主が餌を与えすぎること・・・ペットは自分でパックを開けられませんから。」

However, there is an upside.
しかし、（味の追求には）良い面もある。

There are mounting concerns about the environmental impact of pet food, too
ペットフードの環境への影響も懸念されており、

- in 2009, two New Zealand scientists estimated the planetary cost of keeping a dog as roughly twice that of having a medium-sized SUV.
2009年にニュージーランドの２人の科学者が、犬を飼うことによる地球環境への負担は、中型SUVを所有する負担の約２倍になると試算した。

This is where palatants come in.
そこで登場するのが食味剤だ。

おねだりの視線・・・負けています（笑）。

食事時は必ず座布団に座って「今日は何？」という、キラキラした目で見つめてくるので困っています（笑）。
