先日から「Why are bed bugs so difficult to deal with? -「なぜトコジラミ対策は難しい？」を読んでいます。

In 2012, Nina Jenkins, an entomologist at Pennsylvania State University in the US,

developed a formulation containing Beauveria bassiana, a natural and indigenous fungus that causes disease in insects, but is harmless to humans.

Unlike chemical pesticides, which require direct, long-term exposure to be lethal,

the fungus spores are picked up by bedbugs when they walk across the sprayed surface.
この菌の胞子は、トコジラミが散布された表面を横切ったときに拾われる。

Once covered in the spores, the bugs spread them around by grooming themselves, and within 20 hours of exposure, the spores germinate and colonise their bodies.
一旦この胞子に覆われると、虫はグルーミングによって胞子をまき散らし、20時間以内に胞子が発芽して体内に定着する。

germinate「芽を出す、生じる、芽生える」。

Jenkins has now formed a spin-out company to market the product.
ジェンキンズは現在、独立した別会社を設立し、この製品を販売している。

spin-out「引き延ばす、過ごす、送る、長く保たせる」。

“Bed bugs only need to contact the treated surface briefly to pick up the spores and become infected,” says Jenkins.
「トコジラミがこの胞子を拾って感染するには、処理した表面に短時間接触するだけでよいのです」とジェンキンス氏。

“Exposed bed bugs also take the spores back to their hidden shelters, infecting other bed bugs in the population.

This strategy works because bed bugs are ‘obligate blood feeders’ who must emerge from their hidden shelters to seek a blood meal.”
この戦略が効く理由は、トコジラミが“生きるために血を吸う者”であり、隠れ家から出なければ血液の餌を得られないためです。」

うわー、すごいですね！

一匹でもこの胞子に一度感染してしまえば、同じ巣に暮らすトコジラミ軍団は、ほぼ撲滅出来そうですし、それらが他の個体と接触していれば、他の軍団もいずれ絶えると。

これがトコジラミから世界を救うのでしょうか？
